SR2 Powertools Public Beta Release

After a massive effort from Rafael Rivera and myself, we are both proud to announce the public beta release of SR2 Powertools rev 5. This release fixes the speedup issues for SR2 while playing in Windows 7 without desync’ing the cutscene audio like Cheat Engine does. In addition, it also provides debug_print functionality for lua scripts and shows realtime xyz coordinates of the player which can be toggled off and on with scroll lock.

You will need to figure out your correct speed though and set it manually in the .ini. This should be the same value you use in cheat engine. If you are having trouble determining the correct speed, I still have my original speedup stopwatch test available. A perfect sync time for the race should 1:42.34. As long as you are within a second or two you should be ok using that value.

    Very nice! Been looking for this since I got W 7. Only issue so far is the game is crashing during a cutscene during the mission at the Airport when you confronting what’s his face getting off the plane.

    I’ll deal, nice work!

      Thanks for the positive feedback. The crash you’re having in Ronin Mission: 5 Orange Threat Level is a known bug with the PC version since the game’s release. The way to get around it is to just skip the cutscene. I was able to fix it though in the latest version of my Gentlemen of the Row mod. I also released a stand alone fix if you wanted to create your own patch file.

      EDIT: I was looking through my notes and realized that the fix for that cutscene is actually releasing in the upcoming v1.7. All my SR2 modding is always open beta, so just email me at my nick at gmail.com if you would like access now to the beta version before release.

    The fix works great except for me it crashes whenever I get to a cutscene. Any ideas?

      There have been two similar reports of crashing. Both were resolved by reinstalling SR2:

      I think the crashing was directly related to DirectX and the reinstall was part of that. I would first make sure that you don’t have anything else running that is DirectX related (for example FRAPS.) Then try reinstalling DirectX directly from the SR2 install folder in your Steam directory. If that doesn’t work, go ahead and delete and reinstall SR2 and see if that helps. You can also try running windowed mode as a last resort.

      One last thing to note is that the fix will only run correctly with the legitimate Steam version of the game.

      Good luck!

    im a noob at this but recently i purchased saints row 2 from steam and like every one i have been having probs with speed and slows downs i would like to know how can i use the powertools files/program to fix the issues im having with the game i read the read me file but still some what confused about command propt and so on

      @Lance
      The readme is a bit unclear, so we’ll probably need to revise that with the next version. What you’ll need to do is pretty simple.
      * Download the powertools and extract the contents into your sr2 install directory where the sr2_pc.exe is
      * Right click on install.cmd and choose Run as Adminstrator from the menu. This will create a symbolic link called dxfreezer.dll
      * Open the powertools.ini file (now in your install directory) and change the last line to the slowdown % you need. By default it is:
      [speed]
      percentage = 1.0

      ^1.0 is no change. So, if you want to run it at 80% speed you would change that line to:
      percentage = 0.8

      The further your cpu frequency is away from 3.2Ghz the more drastic change you will need. Most people usually use a value somewhere between 0.6 and 0.9. You will have to play with it a bit to get it running at a speed that works well for you. You can tell if the powertools are working correctly by toggling on and off the OSD with your Scroll Lock key. Good luck!

    My game is crushing at every cutscene!

    • IdolNinja says:

      @Knockturnal
      That is usually a sign of a DirectX issue. Make sure that you don’t have any other DirectX apps running in the background (FRAPS, debuggers, etc.) You may also want to reinstall DirectX from your SR2 install folder and install the latest libraries from Microsoft. You could also try running windowed instead of fullscreen which seems to be more stable.

    @IdolNinja
    Thanks for replying but none of those things fixed my problem. I reinstalled DX from game folder and try the game, same result, then close down all programs that i could even did ctrl-alt-del and close all of them I could and went windowed even installed latest DX. So as b4 when I start mission and any of cutscenes starts it just goes black and pop up that close program / debug or send or what ever, the same as b4 just less fps now in windowed :(

    • IdolNinja says:

      @Knockturnal
      You are using the encrypted legal Steam exe, and not a cracked version correct? I just found out earlier that the cracked pirated versions will show these same symptoms of crashing at cutscenes. I will only support people running legal copies.

    @IdolNinja
    I made it work now I had 2 reinstall my steam and game then steam auto patch it and then I applyed your files and set speed to 0.81 I think so no problems till now. Thx for responding and btw my name is Knocturnal u miss spelled it twice kinda changes the meaning but whatever :D thx again.

      @Knocturnal
      Glad to hear that you get it all sorted out, and that the reinstall worked. It’s good to know for any other users who have the same issue. :)

  8. Degree says:

    Finally got it working after it crashing the game every cutscene.

    (BY REINSTALLING SR2)

    But I have read that powertools fixes cutscenes… But now I notice instead of running too fast the cutscenes run way too slowly. Anyone else have this trouble?

    And by the way.. FANTASTIC job on GOTR and Powertools… The fast forward bug being ignored it a travesty I compare to the uncustomisable controls of Scarface on PC. Well Done!

  9. Degree says:

    Sorry, I spoke too soon.
    Crashes on the cutscene straight after recruiting mission… Which sucks cos that mission is boooring and takes forever.

  10. Degree says:

    Either way if I can’t get it to work, you my friend are a credit to this game. I applaud your efforts at making it work again for Win 7.

    Thank you very much.

  11. Degree says:

    Is it normal that my game runs fast but the cutscenes run normal without using anything?

  12. Degree says:

    Ahh, I bought my game from Harvey Normal but use a crack to bypass steam… I only recently got the internet back on and have never liked steam.

  13. NIko says:

    So when will the next version of Saints Row 2 PowerTool please ? :)
