Supposedly the cover and another pic about SR3 for the upcoming issue of Game Informer was leaked. It’s not officially confirmed by Volition yet, but the general consensus seems to be that it is real.

Vibrant Colors

I created a new weather type called vibrant and an accompanying non-flagging cheat for it in the latest build of GotR that I linked earlier today. This mode boosts up the saturation so everything pops with color. I made sure that this particular weather can never be chosen automatically by the game, and since it’s a cheat code it can be toggled off and on.

I also increased the saturation level of the clear skies weather condition (though nowhere near as much.) Clear skies procs roughly 50% of the time while normally playing, and looks great with more color. All the other weather conditions like pre-storm, thunderstorm, etc still have their slightly washed out look that they did before.

The latest WIP build of GotR I linked earlier has this Vibrant mod included. I would love to hear some input from players. Here’s some pics!

Radio mod update and Wong unlock

I updated my Dual Radio mod today to include both 105 EZZY and 89 GENX radio stations. Both stations still go away after 50% completion and finishing Samedi mission 4, but now they come back at the end of the game as bonus stations giving the player all 12 stations after beating the final Revelations mission.

I also completed the Mr. Wong homie unlock screen and got everything tested.

SR2 Extra Dialogue

Minimaul was able to figure out the format for all in-game text and did a dump of everything. From his work I was able to piece together most of the dialogue for cut SR2 activities and other things:

“ZOMBIE_HANK_MONOLOGUE_01″: “As a news correspondent I’ve seen a lot of things.  I’ve watched famine destroy villages, I’ve witnessed psychic surgeons cure cancer, I’ve even covered wars…but I’ve never seen anything like this.  My name is Hank East.  Remember that name, because in three days I’m going to be reporting the story of a lifetime.”

Looks like a Dead Rising joke about Frank West. :D

Piracy, Guardian Angel, and Hijacking were cut activities that didn’t make it in to the final game. There are a lot of resources still around though including extra audio. I was able to reconstruct the back and forth dialogue for most of them:


LI: “I’m pleased you could make it.  Wong Sheng Tai spoke highly of you.”
PLAYER: “Did Wong also tell you I don’t work for free?”
LI: “Of course…but before we discuss payment perhaps we should speak of what I would have you do.”
PLAYER: “If you were talking to Wong it probably has to do with killing some muthafuckers…”
LI: “This isn’t about simple murder.  Several ambassadors are arriving to Stilwater for a summit, it’s imperative that thes-”
PLAYER: “Killing the ambassadors won’t be a problem.”
LI: “I don’t want you to kill them.”
PLAYER”You lost me.”
LI: “These men and women need to be protected from people like you at any cost.  I will pay you handsomely to ensure their safe travel.”
LI: “Is there a problem?”
PLAYER: “I was just hoping to, ya know, kill some dignitaries.  But don’t worry, this’ll be fun too.”


PLAYER: “This place looks a lot different when I’m not robbing it.”
PLAYER: “Just because I’ve knocked this place off before doesn’t give you the right to be bitchy…”
PLAYER: “You really wanna tell someone with a gun their wrong?”
PLAYER: “Does it look like I do retail?”

SARA: “(Interrupting) Of course, donating those supplies is a huge tax write off for us but we really would like for the whole process to be a little more profitable for us.”

SARA: “Well, that’s why we’ve decided to jettison some of the medicine from the cargo plane mid flight.”
PLAYER: “Excuse me?”
SARA: “We dump a portion of the promised medicine, you go pick it up and sell it for money.  Insurance compensates us for the loss and everybody wins.”

Gentlemen of the Row v1.9 has been on hold while some of the final texture issues get sorted out. Namely, the ability to add new textures to the game instead of replacing existing ones. I also needed an extended break after months of work on the last couple of versions.

This weekend I started putting together a checklist for the planned additions and changes for v1.9. One of the big new features is adding new cribs as story unlocks that also unlock teleports to many previously inaccessible locations.

Dual Radios and Randomization

It’s always annoyed me that the 105.0 EZZY Radio Station in game was replaced by 105.0 THE WORLD at the halfway point of the game, so I poked around in the radio files and figured out how to lift the restriction. Now both stations are available at the halfway point. Yeah, it’s weird that they are both 105.0, but at least now I can have my Whistle Happy and Tchoupa Twist post game.

I also did some poking trying to see if there was a way to randomize the custom MY RADIO playlist after seeing a request for it on the Steam forums. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the random flags in music.xtbl work the same way that the other stations do. I think that I might be able to call a random function in the pause_menu.lua for each track and save their position on menu exit though. It would mean that a player would have to go into the menu and exit it to randomize the playlist each time they wanted it to change/randomize. That’s kind of inelegant though, so I’ll have to give it some more thought.

Catching Up

All sorts of stuff has been going on lately in the SR2 modding world.

I released an Allowed Heli Weapons mod that allows the passenger to fire any weapon out the side of the Opressor and Gyro Daddy in coop.

The SparRow mod has finally been completed with all stores. I fixed some remaining issues, and also added in 20+ new colored Tornados including some Pearlescent, Iridescent, and Matte Military colors as a holdover until we can get the heli mechanic working.

Tidosho released v2.5 of his Vehicle Powertrain mod which now fixes the handling of the Titan, Peterliner, Westbury, Hayate, Donovan, and Buffalo in addition to the previous cars.

Bernard the Beast released a cool little mod that adds a 2nd wardrobe lightcone to the Rec Center locker room when you buy the Suburbs dock. He also posted a cool thank you pic to me for the help I gave him which I thought was pretty awesome.

RedRage and I worked together on fixing all of the broken option names at the mechanic so they read correctly now.

Today I figured out how to get all the sports makeup working which is now available at Rusty’s Needle and Image as Designed and fully color customizable. This was a real pain to do and I finally got it working by enabling them as multi-slots. I believe that this is the key to also getting the rest of the crashing clothing items working.

Finally, Gentlemen of the Row v1.8 BETA 7 was released. We’re getting really close to public release now that that SparRow is complete. The final piece is the heli mechanic which RedRage and I have been working like mad on trying to make it work. Hopefully we’ll have some good news to share soon!

Gang Candy Paint Mod

I released a Gang Candy Paint mod for SR2 today that adds all the gang paint colors to the Candy Paint color set. This means you can now use them to customize cars, boats, and planes. The new colors look amazingly cool on just about anything.

Also, v1.8 BETA 4 was released yesterday with a lot of new content including the much anticipated SparRow mod by Kahalee which adds a bunch of new ownable vehicle dealerships. The new beta 4 also has new weapon meshes, shotgun animations, fixes, vehicle tweaks, and even a brand new custom decomissioned police car by foamcup.

Stores, Music, Sig Sauers, and TGA crashes

I spent some time today helping out Kahalee with his Sparrow Aircraft mod for SR2. This is his first mod and it adds a brand new aircraft dealership at the Airport named Sparrow Aircraft. The mod also moves all the helicopters and planes to this new dealership and removes them from Foreign Power and Cycles. Kahalee and I were able to get everything working except for the actual Dealership name that is displayed when browsing vehicles. Strangely, in the lua, it is expecting a crc value instead of a string name, and anything else bombs out. I wonder if the developers had crashing issues with stores that were just passing text and weren’t defined so set it up this way to force them to use a variable. The mod is mostly finished (other than the name) and was released for beta testing today. It’s pretty exciting since this is the first new store that has been added to the game and opens up the possibility for even more.

InnocentSam was able to get all the ambient music and radio commercials purchasable at Scratch That, so you’ll now be able to listen to weird things like the Zombie Uprising Music, or the Club music in your car. He also was able to hex edit the binary weapon mesh and fix the unused Sig Sauer. This is going to be tricky to implement since we’ve hit a weapon limitation with how many additional weapons we can have in game before it breaks.

I also tested an idea about how we could temporarily work around the the lack of a texture repacker by converting an extracted .png texture to a .tga format and just sticking it in patch.vpp_pc. Then, point the xtbl/lua to the (unpacked) TGA file instead. I tried this out with a couple of the logos but it just crashed the game no matter what formats I tried.

I had much better luck with the animation fixes since I haven’t seen a single problem from testers with the latest beta 3. I also played for a few hours tonight with SoulGate and didn’t see a single instance of the “airplane arms,” so I think that issue has finally been put to rest. Also, by going through preload_anim.tbl I was also able to cleanup a bunch of unused animation files and open some room to do some new taunts. It was perfect timing since InnocentSam is almost finished with a new taunt using Shaundi’s hackey sack animation. That definitely sounds like it will be a cool addition.
